PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – You know that pile of pots you dragged into the garage or hid in the basement right before Thanksgiving? This is a good time to get them ready for spring. Really scrub them out and disinfect them with bleach. Particularly if you plan on planting seeds in any of your pots – seedlings often wilt and fail from diseases or fungi, which you can help prevent with clean pots.

But even if you aren’t sowing seeds, clean pots give any plants you buy a much better chance at success and survival too; from annuals to herbs to tomatoes and other veggies.

And if you’re like most gardeners, in the spring, the last thing you’ll want to do is wash plant pots. So, now in the winter, is a good time to clean your pots, repair bad cracks, and repaint. So then, when you come home with those first flats of fresh flowers in the spring, you won’t have to stop to scrub the pots – you can just pop in your plants right away.
